I'm Alright

Picks up where the last record leaves off. Less about what happened to me and more about who I became because of it. These songs wrestle with identity, faith, anxiety, love, and growing older, the slow realization that healing isn't a finish line, and that maybe no one ever completely figures themselves out.

We Were Never Really Here, Revisited

The same fifteen songs from the original record, rebuilt from the ground up: new melodies, new arrangements, new instrumentation. Same story, told by someone standing a little further from it. Coming to streaming platforms soon, but available now to preview here, listen on SoundCloud, and purchase on vinyl.

We Were Never Really Here

Written after the end of an abusive marriage, a collection of songs about learning how to exist again after years of feeling like I had disappeared. Some days that looked like sitting alone with a cup of coffee. Other days it looked like wondering how everything fell apart, or trying to believe tomorrow might be a little better than today. More than anything, it's a record about finding yourself again after someone convinced you that you were lost. Now streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud.

About Northernly

Northernly is the music project of Jonathan Valania.

I started writing these songs because I didn't know what else to do with everything I was carrying. What began as a way to survive eventually became a way to understand myself.

The first record, We Were Never Really Here, was written after the end of an abusive marriage. It's a collection of songs about learning how to exist again after years of feeling like I had disappeared. Some days that looked like sitting alone with a cup of coffee. Other days it looked like wondering how everything fell apart or trying to believe tomorrow might be a little better than today. More than anything, it's a record about finding yourself again after someone convinced you that you were lost.

I'm Alright picks up where that story leaves off. It's less about what happened to me and more about who I became because of it. The songs wrestle with identity, faith, anxiety, love, and growing older. They're about realizing that healing isn't a finish line and that maybe no one ever completely figures themselves out.

Across both records, I keep coming back to the same idea: ordinary moments matter. A drive home. Bad coffee. A July afternoon. A motel room. A quiet river. Those are the places where life actually happens, and they're usually the places where we change without realizing it.

If these songs do anything, I hope they remind you that you're not the only person trying to make sense of your life.

Welcome to Northernly.
